    ENGINE

I am reporting a suspected safety defect involving my daughter's 2017 Hyundai Tucson, VIN [XXX], with approximately 77,940 miles. The vehicle experienced an engine failure beginning with the illumination of the oil-pressure warning light and Check Engine Light, followed by a pronounced engine knocking noise. The vehicle subsequently could not continue running. The vehicle was inspected by a Hyundai dealership, which diagnosed an engine failure. I am aware of Hyundai Safety Recall 209 / NHTSA Recall 21V-727 involving certain 2017 Hyundai Tucson vehicles equipped with the 2.0-liter Nu GDI engine. Hyundai's recall documentation identifies premature connecting-rod-bearing wear and specifically identifies abnormal engine knocking and illumination of the oil-pressure warning light as symptoms that can precede engine damage and stalling. My daughter's vehicle experienced these same symptoms. Hyundai has informed us that this particular VIN is not included in Recall 209 and Hyundai Motor America has denied our request for assistance. I am therefore asking NHTSA to review this complaint as a potential safety defect and determine whether there may be additional 2017 Tucson vehicles outside the current Recall 209 population experiencing the same or substantially similar engine failure. I am not claiming that the vehicle is definitively covered by Recall 209. Rather, I am asking NHTSA to investigate whether the exclusion of this vehicle is appropriate given the similarity between the actual failure symptoms and the defect identified in Recall 209. I can provide the dealership's diagnostic documentation, Hyundai Motor America's denial, photographs, maintenance records, and other supporting information upon request. Vehicle: 2017 Hyundai Tucson, VIN: [XXX], Mileage: Approximately 77,940 miles Failure: Engine knocking, oil-pressure warning light, Check Engine Light, engine failure/stalling Related Recall: Hyundai Recall 209 / NHTSA 21V-727. I have a 2017 Hyundai Tucson with a 1.6 turbo engine, and I have been experiencing massive oil consumption. Oil is coming out of the tail pipe with occasional big puff of smoke out of the tailpipe. Skipping and hesitation during acceleration, rough cold start, I have previously had the check engine light on with a multiple misfire code. I changed the plugs and the coils, and it did not resolve the problems. I then took it to the mechanic, and he told me that the car has to go to Hyundai because these are known problems with my particular motor. I took it to Balise Hyundai in Hyannis Mass. and was told that they know about these motor issues but could not help me because the engine light was not on.' If the light comes on, then bring it back and we will check it out'.I was then told that any work performed would be my responsibility to pay for it out of my pocket. If it a known problem by Hyundai, then I think that a recall or something should be posted so customers are not stuck with a very big service bill. Any help to get my vehicle running the way it was designed to would be greatly appreciated. Apparently, there are no recalls or campaigns about these issues on my vehicle even though they are well known to Hyundai

The Core Symptoms: "The high-pressure fuel pump is leaking internally. Raw gasoline is flooding into the engine oil crankcase, causing severe fuel dilution. The engine air filter is physically soaked in raw fuel and smells strongly of gasoline." My engine is always extremely hot after I have only went 15 mins away from home. Sometimes takes over two hours to cool down. The Safety Risk: "When attempting to accelerate, the vehicle experiences severe fuel starvation, causing the engine to bog down and act like it is going to stall in the middle of traffic, creating a severe crash hazard. Additionally, there is a loud 'popping' sound/mini-backfire upon turning the vehicle off due to unburnt fuel vapors, presenting a high risk of an underhood engine fire. I have only 83,000 miles on my car.

    STEERING · UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Subject: Formal Safety Complaint Regarding Steering Failure – 2017 Hyundai Tucson To Whom It May Concern, I am submitting this complaint to request that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigate a potentially serious safety defect involving the Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system in my 2017 Hyundai Tucson. I am the second owner of this vehicle. The vehicle currently has approximately 61,000 miles and remains within Hyundai's 10-Year/100,000-Mile Powertrain Warranty period applicable to subsequent owners. Approximately two years ago, the vehicle's engine was replaced under a Hyundai safety recall. Recently, I began experiencing intermittent steering problems in which the steering wheel becomes extremely difficult to turn and appears to momentarily jam or lock while driving. This condition significantly affects vehicle control and creates a serious safety hazard, particularly during turns, lane changes, or emergency maneuvers. I brought the vehicle to Advantage Hyundai in [XXX] for diagnosis. The dealership determined that the vehicle had a Motor Position Sensor Error (Diagnostic Trouble Code C2401) within the Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system. The dealership informed me that the repair is not covered under the vehicle's warranty and declined to repair it. The dealer also submitted a request to Hyundai for goodwill assistance (Prior Authorization No. XXX), but Hyundai denied that request. I subsequently contacted Hyundai National Consumer Affairs (Case No. XXX) seeking assistance. Unfortunately, Hyundai also denied my request despite the relatively low mileage and the serious safety implications of the steering malfunction. My concern extends beyond the cost of repair. A malfunction in the electronic power steering system that causes steering to bind, jam, or become difficult to control presents a significant risk of a crash, injury, or loss of life. Steering is one of the most critical safety INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

    ENGINE

I am filing a safety complaint regarding my Hyundai vehicle after experiencing a sudden engine failure that appears consistent with known rod bearing and engine defects affecting certain Hyundai engines. While driving, my vehicle began making a knocking noise and shortly thereafter suffered catastrophic engine failure. The engine lost power and became inoperable, requiring the vehicle to be towed. This failure occurred without any prior indication that the engine was about to fail. My concern is that this type of engine failure creates a significant safety hazard because it can occur unexpectedly while driving, potentially causing a loss of power in traffic and increasing the risk of a crash. The dealership inspected the vehicle and engine but did not report excessive sludge buildup. I have provided available maintenance records showing that oil changes were performed during my ownership. Despite this, there appears to be disagreement regarding the cause of the failure. I am aware of reports involving rod bearing and engine failures in similar Hyundai vehicles and believe NHTSA should investigate whether this failure is related to a broader manufacturing or design defect. The cost of replacing the engine is substantial, and consumers may be placed at risk if these failures occur while vehicles are being operated on public roads. I am requesting that NHTSA review this issue and determine whether additional investigation, recalls, or other corrective actions are warranted. 2017 Hyundai Tucson | VIN: [XXX] | Mileage: 75,000 I have owned this vehicle for approximately five years and have experienced severe excessive oil consumption for the past two to three years. The issue was first discovered when the vehicle entered protective mode due to critically low oil levels despite a routine oil change having been performed only a few months prior. I am currently required to add approximately one quart of oil every month to maintain safe operating levels. I visited an authorized Hyundai dealership to have an oil consumption test performed. The dealership informed me that if the test confirmed excessive consumption, I would be required to pay out of pocket for an engine replacement. I declined, as Hyundai Motor America has publicly acknowledged this exact defect in the 2017 Tucson through NHTSA Recall 21V727000, multiple Technical Service Bulletins, and a class action settlement covering 2014-2021 Tucson vehicles with the Nu 2.0-liter GDI engine. My VIN was found ineligible on the class action settlement website despite the acknowledged defect. Hyundai has admitted this engine suffers from premature bearing wear, excessive oil consumption, and risk of engine failure and fire. I am requesting NHTSA investigate why my VIN falls outside current recall coverage despite presenting identical symptoms to affected vehicles. The engine (connecting rod bearings in the 2.0L Nu GDI engine) failed. The vehicle entered limp mode with DTC P1326, then died on the road and the engine seized completely (will not turn by hand when attempted; only clicks on starter). It is currently at First Hyundai dealer in [XXX], under Repair Order #XXXand available for inspection. The vehicle suddenly lost power and died while driving on the road. This created a significant risk of an accident or being stranded in traffic. I was on a busy highway and almost got hit twice. There is also a known fire risk associated with this exact defect (oil leaking onto hot engine components), as stated in Recall 209 (NHTSA 21V727). The vehicle was towed to First Hyundai. They have documented the no-start/seized condition on Repair Order #XXX. A prior independent scanner reading showed P1326 before the code was cleared. The dealer has not performed the full diagnostic inspection (scheduled around June 11). Hyundai Corporate (Claim #XXX) has been notified but has not responded after multiple escalation emails. The vehicle first went into limp mode ("Engine Protection Mode") with DTC P1326 on the scanner. Shortly after, the engine died completely and would not restart. This occurred after Recall 209 (bearing/KSDS campaign) was completed on XXX. Additional Details: This is a known issue with premature connecting rod bearing wear. The dealer is refusing to provide a loaner/rental upon drop-off, which contradicts TSB 22-01-023H (Dealer Best Practices for P1326 vehicles). Left rear passenger door latch failure to open either from inside or outside. This is a mechanical failure of the cables operating the latch. A passenger could not easily exit the vehicle in an emergency situation, also there is no way short of breaking the glass to easily access or if necessary extricate the passenger in an emergency situation. As evidenced from online searches and forums this failure is all too common and has been addressed with a narrow set of vehicles with an extended warranty applied to this failure. This is an issue of safety. There needs to be a recall to upgrade affected vehicles and their door mechanisms.

I am submitting a complaint regarding a 2017 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate AWD equipped with the 1.6L Turbo Gamma GDI engine. My vehicle currently has approximately 127,000 miles and has experienced sudden engine knocking consistent with rod bearing failure and/or catastrophic internal engine damage. The vehicle has been properly maintained, including regular oil changes. However, the engine began consuming excessive oil without warning. Upon inspection by an independent repair facility, the engine was found to have extremely low oil levels despite being within the normal oil change interval. After refilling the oil, the engine continued making severe knocking noises, and the repair facility advised that the engine is likely non-repairable and requires replacement. This failure appears materially similar to the rod bearing and engine failure issues already widely documented in Hyundai/Kia engine defect investigations and class action settlements involving related Gamma and GDI engine platforms. I have learned that Hyundai extended warranties for certain vehicles with similar engine defects up to 15 years/150,000 miles; however, my specific Tucson trim/engine configuration does not appear included despite experiencing the same type of failure. This vehicle has also previously required major drivetrain repairs under warranty, including two transmission replacements and turbocharger replacement. My concern is both financial and safety-related. A sudden engine failure or seizure while driving could create a serious roadway hazard and risk of loss of power in traffic. Additionally, Hyundai dealerships have advised that replacement engines for this vehicle are no longer readily available. I believe Hyundai should further investigate whether the 2017 Tucson 1.6T Gamma GDI engine should be included in existing engine defect warranty extensions and/or recalls.

My 2017 Hyundai Tucson is experiencing dangerous, sudden engine stalling, which are symptoms directly matching Service Campaign T1B. These critical safety issues surfaced following a total engine replacement in June 2025. Despite the vehicle being within the 12-month/12,000 mile workmanship warranty, the dealership is refusing to honor this coverage or offer goodwill assistance. My claim is based on a documented pattern of physical and technical negligence: - Failure to Update Software: The dealership failed to perform the mandatory ECM/TCM software integration (Campaign T1B) during engine swap, which is required to prevent the exact stalling I am now experiencing. - Dismissal of Warning Lights (Code P0456): One day after the engine replacement was “completed,” I returned to the dealership because the Check Engine Light illuminated with Code P0456. This was dismissed by the service provider without a proper diagnostic resolution, despite being a direct indicator of improper vacuum line reconnection during the engine installation. - Mechanical Negligence (Coolant Leak): Post-engine swap, the vehicle developed a coolant leak, which was a direct result of improper reassembly. Additional proof of the lack of due diligence during the repair. The lack of follow-through, combined with the dismissal of a life-safety defect and poor physical workmanship, suggests a total failure in the case management process. I am urgently requesting assistance to resolve this hazardous situation.

The panoramic sunroof glass suddenly shattered while the vehicle was being driven on the interstate, with no visible impact, object strike, or prior damage observed. The component involved is the sunroof glass panel, and it has already been removed and replaced through insurance repairs, so it is not available for inspection (however, pictures are available upon request). The incident created a loud, explosion-like sound and resulted in glass fragments falling into the interior of the vehicle, including onto the driver and the front-seat passenger, causing minor injuries. This also created a significant safety risk due to driver distraction, panic, and the potential for more serious injury while the vehicle was in motion at highway speeds. The issue has not been reproduced or independently duplicated by a dealer or service center; however, it was inspected and documented by the insurance company and repair facility during the claims and repair process, which confirmed that full glass replacement was necessary. The vehicle or component has been inspected by insurance representatives and a repair shop, but it has not been inspected by the manufacturer or law enforcement. the door latches are no longer opening the doors from the inside of the vehicle. This started with the passenger rear and now is effecting the drivers door. The only way to get out of the vehicle is to crawl over the seat to get to a door that is still operational. No warnings, just doesn't open when you pull on the handle. Will be making an appointment with a local dealer/service dept but given the security concerns this is being reported here as well.

To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to formally escalate an unresolved safety issue involving my 2017 Hyundai Tucson (VIN: [XXX] ) that has now been ongoing for over two years. I have made repeated attempts to complete a safety recall repair through multiple authorized Hyundai dealerships, including Hyundai of [XXX] and Hyundai in [XXX] . Despite scheduling several appointments, I have consistently been turned away, had appointments effectively canceled, or been told that no one is available to perform the repair. This has occurred across more than one location and over an extended period of time. This is unacceptable. A federally mandated safety recall especially one involving the engine is not optional and must be completed within a reasonable timeframe. The continued failure to complete this repair places me at risk and reflects a serious breakdown in both dealership accountability and corporate oversight. Additionally, my vehicle has experienced significant paint chipping. While I understand this may not be a safety recall issue, it has affected the overall condition and value of my vehicle. Given the prolonged delay and inconvenience I have experienced, I am requesting that this concern also be reviewed for potential goodwill repair or coverage. At this point, I am requesting immediate action: Assignment of a case manager A confirmed and honored appointment date for recall repair at a dealership that is able to complete the work Written confirmation that the repair will be completed without further delay Information regarding a loaner vehicle or transportation if the repair requires extended time Please note that I am filing a formal complaint with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office due to the repeated failure to complete a federally required safety recall. If this matter is not resolved promptly, I will pursue additional consumer protection and legal remedies. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My ABS has been sticking and finally the pad broke off. my car made a squealing noise everytime I drove it. I had parked in my driveway and there was a piece of metal on the ground. I showed it to my son, he took the tire off and said it held my ABS Brake pad on to my Driver side rear. He is a master tech for Subaru. I just haven't had time to take it into Hyundai. It has stopped squealing, but my ABS brakes no longer work.

About every 500 miles I have to add about a quart of oil. I brought my car to McDaniels Subaru for maintenance on my car. My son is a master tech there and I know he is very thorough. My contract lets me go there also. So he checked the dipstick and it was below a quart of oil. He did change the oil change. I cannot drive a long distance without carry a large container of oil. He has warned me not to let it get low again or the engine will seize. This car gets all its regular Maintenance on time. I have a contract to do this. The dealership had all the maintenance records at the time I purchased it. It has been very well maintained.

On March 10, 2026, my 2017 Hyundai Tucson entered 'Limp Home Mode' while driving, a known safety defect that causes a sudden loss of engine power. Diagnostic testing confirmed error code P1326 (Knock Sensor Detection System - KSDS). Despite this vehicle being covered under the Theta II Engine Class Action Settlement (Recall 209), which provides a 15-year/150,000-mile extended warranty for this specific issue, the dealership (Jim Ellis Hyundai of Atlanta) is refusing to perform the warrantied repair. Instead, the dealership has provided an estimate (#XXX) attempting to charge me $816.22 for the knock sensor replacement. They are also withholding the full GDS diagnostic scan reports and freeze frame data despite multiple written requests. Furthermore, the dealership is threatening to charge daily storage fees while actively denying a mandated safety repair. This refusal to honor the settlement warranty leaves the vehicle in an unsafe, unrepaired condition. This vehicle is a subject of the In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation II settlement. The refusal of the dealership to perform the KSDS-related repair (P1326}) is a direct violation of the court-approved settlement terms and a failure to address a documented safety defect. This car has major oil consumption that affects the engine and catalytic converter. This can cause engine damage and stalls in driving that affect safety on the roads because the car doesn't accelerate properly. There were no warning signals to indicate this being a problem with the car, especially at purchase. This car will get an oil change and in less than a week, the oil is gone and bone dry.

While driving my vehicle, the engine RPM suddenly revved very high, and the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. A warning messaged appeared stating "Transmission too hot stop safely." I was driving up a hill when this happened. I pulled over and turned the vehicle off for about two minutes. When I restarted the vehicle, the warning message disappeared even though the vehicle would not realistically have cooled down that quickly. The issue concerns me because it could create a dangerous situation in traffic if the vehicle loses power or hesitates to accelerate when pulling into traffic or climbing a hill. The problem has occurred without warning and does not leave and persistent warning lights afterwards. I am very scared to drive this car, especially when I have my child with me. If I need to move out of the way and someone is driving that is not paying attention, there will be an accident because of the hesitation and the non-movement when I accelerate. I am reporting this issue in case it is related to a defect with the transmission system in this vehicle.

The contact's wife owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that the engine was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. During frequent oil checks, the oil on the dipstick was low soon after an oil change. The vehicle was taken to the dealer approximately 15 times for oil consumption issues. Several oil consumption tests were performed on the vehicle for every 1,000 miles driven; however, the results varied from normal to low oil consumption. The engine had been partially disassembled twice, and pictures were taken and sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer approved a combustion chamber cleaning to be performed on the vehicle; however, the failure persisted. The contact had spoken with the manufacturer several times and was provided a case number. The manufacturer ultimately denied the request for an engine replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 63,547.

While driving on the interstate at highway speed, my 2017 Hyundai Tucson lost power without any warning lights or prior symptoms. The vehicle experienced an immediate loss of propulsion while I was traveling in traffic, creating a dangerous situation because surrounding vehicles were also moving at highway speed & I had to quicky maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder with no power. The vehicle had approximately 73,861 miles at the time of the failure. After the incident, the vehicle was taken to a Hyundai dealership and diagnosed with a burned exhaust valve requiring replacement of the cylinder head & valve. The estimated cost of repair provided by the dealership was approximately 7550. The vehicle had no prior warning lights or symptoms before the sudden loss of power. A sudden engine failure resulting in loss of propulsion at highway speed presents a serious safety risk to both the driver and surrounding traffic. This was an extremely dangerous failure.

I purchased this car from drive time, and when told about a possible recall on the engine i asked about it. We were told that the issue had been resolved. Not even 10 minutes after driving it off the lot the engine started misfiring, we had done a test drive prior to purchasing this vehicle and nothing had popped up on the dash about any problems. We have been unable to get it looked at. I was not sure if a report should have been filed until now. i am unable to produce photos at this time

Car engine seized and lost ALL power going 60mph down the highway at night with my child in the back seat. I have poured quarts and quarts of oil in this vehicle because it burns oil at an alarming rate until it eventually runs dry and the engine seizes. This is extremely dangerous and luckily my child and I were able to drift to the side of the road without harm and injury. Very discouraging that there are thousands of these cars and engines on the road that can literally seize up at any minute. Maintenance was performed and kept up with. The Oil pressure light had been flashing when the vehicle turned but was flashing even when oil had just been changed. These engines are dangerous and have people in a financial hard spot. I still owe $16k on a car I can no longer drive and that Hyundai is saying due to owner maintenance will not get an engine replacement. The Facebook group Hyundai Oil Consumption test has thousands of people dealing with the same exact issue on these cars and engines.

Purchased used via Carvana in Sept 2025, check engine light came on while driving it home indicating a pre-existing mechanical defect. We submitted the claim through Silver Rock (Carvana's warranty company) and brought to their approved mechanic. The recommended the following repairs, several that were denied by Carvana/SilverRock: spark plugs, alternator, serpentine belt, fuel injection service, electrical ignition coil. A month later check engine light illuminated again and through further diagnostics the mechanic found that 2 of the faulty spark plugs were an incorrect model/fit for our vehicle and reported that information which resulted in replacement being approved (a month after initial request). Fast forward to January 2026 we experienced the widely reported knocking noise while driving coming from the engine and had it towed. The damage is a thrown rod and damaged bearing, which is consistent with the current oil consumption litigation, requiring engine replacement. Our 2017 Tucson 1.6 L turbocharge is not included in the recall. Furthermore, Carfax report shows last oil change reported was 2023. Carvana confirms an oil change is part of their 150 point inspection before a sale, however unable to provide me with documentation and failed to report a record of the work to Carfax. There are many instances of negligence on Carvana's part from failure to provide record of maintenance, which is also failure to adhere to their standard policy, and declining recommended service directly from their approved mechanic, knowing that this vehicle could be impacted by the well known defects through Hyundai. We are requesting assistance with engine replacement meeting safety standards and ensuring consumer protection.

It has 103,000 miles on it. It is the same problem as the other person that reported this problem. The other models were recalled but not this one. Im sure by now you know there is a problem with this engine too. It should be replaced by the company!!

    STEERING

2017 Hyundai Tucson SE vehicle mileage approx. 54,000 miles Was driving on a Highway doing approx. 65-70mph within 30 minutes of the 1hr and 1/2 drive I had lost complete POWER STEERING. Wheel stiffened up and was scary and difficult to lane change to a slower lane or attempt to pull over at 11:00PM due too safety and could not pull over for over an 1 hour until I was home safely. Had to hold the wheel tightly for an hour. It was very difficult to turn and enter my double wide driveway and took 3 times to get car straight enough and pull in without Power Steering. Turned vehicle off and I had looked into possible issues with the (EPS) Electric Power Steering and read possible loss of Power Steering check MDPS Fuse in vehicle Interior Fuse Panel for blown fuse and all was Fine with that Fuse.. Then checked MDPS Fuse Panel in engine compartment near battery and found no issue on the long circuit fuse for the MDPS. After researching 2017 Tucson EPS issues I ran a test by Turning Key on and turn Wheel all the way too Right and leave it there for a minute then turn wheel all the way too the Left and leave there for a minute ,then turn steering wheel till wheels are straight and turn key off. Then start car and see if Power Steering comes back when turning steering wheel in which it did but I'm still skeptical if that was the Fix. Hyundai Car dealership wants to charge me $250 too run tests and diagnostics with computer system. Why should I have to pay for this since there have been numerous recalls on 2017 Tucson and the failure rate on some of the Electronics and Safety features and Engine issues and was originally in for a New Paint job for the Recall. And I just received a notification for the Anti-Theft Ignition Cylinder Protector hardware too be installed Free of charge for the ignition and hardware to be added. I have read and seen MDPS assembly issues causing sudden loss of Steering Assist on many of the sites and on these internet Hyundai Blog complaints.

Following the knock sensor detection system update, this car has a P1326 code that forces it into limp mode. Occurs during moderate-hard acceleration, e.g. getting on a highway. The car is limited to ≤2000 RPM and ≤ 45 mph, and rapidly decelerates to that speed if necessary. Acceleration is very limited. This occurs roughly every two weeks, despite having a brand new sensor installed by Hyundai. Hyundai has also allegedly performed cleaning on the sensor and related parts. This has been going on since November, when the recall that installed this update was performed.
