Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2016 Toyota Camry. It was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy after the purchase. The vehicle was a private sale. At the time of purchase, the mileage was 163,000, and at the time of the registration, it was discovered that the mileage was 293,148.

STRUCTURE

The factory-applied paint (Toyota color code 070, Blizzard Pearl) is delaminating and peeling off both the driver-side and passenger-side A-pillars, exposing primer underneath. The clear coat and color coat are separating from the substrate in sheets. This is not impact damage or external wear — it is a failure of paint adhesion. Toyota has acknowledged this defect in Customer Support Program ZKG, which covers 2008–2017 Camry vehicles finished in 070 Blizzard Pearl and 040 Super White. My vehicle is a 2016 Camry in 070. The program provides coverage for 10 years from date of first use. My in-service date was December 2015, so coverage expired in December 2025 — shortly before the defect progressed enough to require repair. The vehicle has been serviced at Toyota dealerships since delivery, with 25 documented service visits beginning with the pre-delivery inspection in October 2015. I contacted the selling brand's local dealer and the Toyota Brand Engagement Center. Both confirmed the vehicle is outside the 10-year window and declined repair. I am paying out of pocket. I am filing so this defect is recorded. The peeling is progressive and will expose bare metal on the A-pillar, which is part of the vehicle's roof-crush and rollover protection structure. In a road-salt environment this creates a corrosion risk on a structural member. No crash, fire, or injury has occurred.

The contact owns a 2016 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving the vehicle, the vehicle was involved in a front-end crash while making a left turn at an intersection. The air bags failed to deploy upon impact. The contact's daughter suffered bruising to the chest and stomach but had not yet sought medical attention. A Police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to a storage facility and was waiting to be towed to another independent mechanic to be inspected. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

STRUCTURE

1. Component / System Failed: - The primary exterior paint and clear coat layer completely separated from the factory electro-coat (E-coat) primer on the vehicle's body structure (specifically near the rear quarter panel, roof pillar, and doors). The vehicle and affected component are available for inspection upon request. 2. Safety / Risk to Safety: - While driving at highway speeds (65+ mph), large, thick sheets of brittle paint layer detach and fly off the vehicle. This creates an unexpected road debris hazard for trailing motor vehicles, potentially causing driver distraction or windshield impact for vehicles behind me. Furthermore, large paint loss around the roof/windshield pillars creates noticeable glares and glare reflection in direct sunlight, compromising visual clarity. 3. Dealer / Professional Confirmation: - Yes. I brought the vehicle to a local Toyota dealership service center. The service department confirmed the paint detachment, noting it matches the known factory primer adhesion failure pattern addressed under Toyota Customer Support Program ZJB. However, they stated the extended program window had elapsed and refused coverage. 4. Prior Inspections: - The vehicle has been inspected by a Toyota dealership service department. It has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives as no collision has occurred yet. 5. Warning Lamps, Messages, or Prior Symptoms: - No dashboard warning lights or messages appeared prior to the failure, as this is a structural/body paint adhesion defect. The issue first appeared as minor blistering/bubbling along the panel edges without any external impact or stone chip damage, and rapidly progressed into large, multi-inch sections peeling off down to the bare grey primer.

STEERING · ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The vehicle touch screen stopped working. It doesn't allow the options to be chosen (radio, audio, and general settings) . The screen remains frozen. The estimated cost for repair is $2,000. The steering wheel vibrate and makes noises when vehicle speed is 40 or above. Diagnostic reports a steering column replacement. Estimated cost $ 800- 2,000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2016 Toyota Camry. The vehicle was a private sale from Facebook Marketplace. The contact stated that after purchasing the vehicle, the vehicle experienced various mechanic failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. At the time of the purchase, the mileage was approximately 117,000; however, it was later discovered that the mileage was 257,080.

STRUCTURE

The METAL trunk torsion bar broke with no warning or symptoms while I was sitting in my vehicle with the trunk closed. While it sounds minimal, it caused such a deafening sound I initially thought there had been an explosion in the rear of my vehicle. This occurred a few minutes after I removed an item from the trunk and closed the trunk. I was sitting in the driver's seat with the car running about to back up when the explosive sound occurred. If the trunk had still been open, the risk of significant injury and death would have been quite high given the explosive sound made when it broke and slammed the interior of the trunk. If it had hit my head, chest or an artery with that level of force, it likely would have caused death in my opinion. There were ZERO warnings. My trunk worked fine, no symptoms of any kind that it was about to fail and that is what makes this so dangerous. This is a part that never should have failed. It should last the lifetime of the car. The largest part of the broken torsion bar IS available for inspection. The smaller piece that broke off and became a potentially lethal projectile must be somewhere behind the paneling, but I have not been able to find it. I can make my car available if an inspector would like to search for the missing piece. I have received a quote from the dealer for replacement, so it has been inspected. Components that failed in the trunk: 64531-06500 Hinge Torsion Bar Right Hand 64127-06110 Torsion Bar Bracket/Hardware Kit. Rear Spoiler/Hardware Kit Note- There is also a 64532-06500 Hinge Torsion Bar Left Hand that could possibly fail in the same way.

STRUCTURE

Paint delamination. It's a known issue. Toyota extended warranty to cover but the local dealership who sold the car is no help. First noticed the paint pealing a few months ago. Started small now increasing significantly.

AIR BAGS

My daughter accidentally rear ended someone in her Toyota Camry. The damage to the front end was severe enough that the car has been totaled but the air bags did not deploy.

Airbags did not deploy after an accident that resulted in the hood crumpling. Car was at a complete stop when hit from behind at approximately 45mph, resulting in the car being pushed forward into the back of another vehicle.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

WAS GLIDING INTO MY GARAGE FOOT WAS ON BRAKE, (SO NO SPEED AT ALL) WHEN I HEARD A SUDDEN ENGINE ROAR AND CAR PICKED UP SPEED AND WAS PROPELLING ME TOWARD THE BACK WALL OF THE GARAGE. I IMMEDIATELY JAMMED ON MY BRAKE BUT WAS NOT ABLE TO STOP BEFORE HITTING RACKS AND WALL AT THE BACK OF MY GARAGE. THIS ACCELERATION OF THE CAR RESULTED IN PROPERTY DAMAGE TO CAR AND AND PROPERTY.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

The driver door began to rattle when the door was closed or when driving down the road. I took it to my Toyota dealer and when they removed the door panel they found the intrusion bar's weld had failed. They confirmed it was a safety issue and referred me to their body shop. The body shop informed they are not allowed to reweld the bar and the only fix is to replace the door. This car has never been in an accident so my only conclusion is that when the car was manufactured the weld was improperly performed. I cannot afford to replace this door and I'm left to drive a car with no intrusion bar to protect me in an accident. I find this very concerning and this should not be something I should have to repair. In conclusion I believe this is Toyota manufacturing issue and they should be responsible for replacing this door which is endangering my safety as an owner and consumer. Thank you.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The radio touchscreen does not work and the buttons on the steering wheel do not function as well. I am unable to touch the screen and the radio changes stations abruptly without me touching it. I am unable to listen to music or change the radio to Bluetooth to listen to my music on my phone.

Malfunction of connections to radio system. All buttons surrounding radio, including radio control buttons on steering wheel, do not function. The screen still turns on and displays the typical home screen but the screen does not function either leaving the radio system stuck on the home screen. Again , none of the buttons and/or screen functions work connected to the radio. The clock time is still displayed and will change but it is the wrong time but once again, cannot be changed because the functions surrounding the radio do not work.

SEAT BELTS

The contact owns a 2016 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that the seat belts of the driver’s and passenger’s side rear seats failed to retract, causing concerns for the contact. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the seat belt retractors were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 132,393.

The engine quit running whenever the headlights, turn signals, or wipers were turned on. This was obviously a serious safety problem when driving! It began intermittently on 6/30/25, but it became a consistent problem by 7/7/25, so I took the car to the closest Toyota Dealership for evaluation. I can provide their service report to you if requested. It took them 6 hours and $1000 to diagnose the problem as bad electrical grounding points (high resistance), which were only revealed after they removed the front bumper. In my opinion, it is an unsafe design to have poor grounding for headlights cause the engine to die.

Despite regular maintenance and timely oil changes, my vehicle began consuming oil excessively around 120,000 miles, leading to significant safety risks. The problem began with sluggish acceleration and grinding noises, both hazardous in city traffic. After hearing grinding noises, I checked the oil level, and the dipstick was completely dry, despite still having 3,000 miles until my next scheduled oil change. The engine was consuming one quart of oil per week under normal driving conditions. Despite multiple visits to Toyota-certified dealerships, the issue was overlooked or minimized. While loading groceries in my trunk, the torsion bar sheared off and broke (the hook part). It fell hard on my shoulder (fortunately not my neck or head). I have never seen steel actually break rather than bend. I tried to fix it but could not. Trunk is heavy and unstable (falls easily), as is part of car in back. Went to Toyota dealer and found out no recall, and "iffy" fix. They wanted $488.50 to try and fix. My body shop estimated $164. and purchased correct Toyota parts, followed their instructions. The bars only held for a few minutes, then they failed to hold up the trunk again. I was almost injured again with this failure, but managed to catch it in time. They refunded me $100. since they said there was no more "play" to work with. Went on social media only to find that many Toyota Camry 2016 and 2015s had torsion bar failures, with no recall. Some said that they spent over $1000. trying to fix it, but never could, no matter what dealership or body shop repaired it. Others gave up and sold it. It is not something that I can "live with". the trunk is heavy to life and unstable. Have to hold it while trying to put things in trunk. I have had 6 Toyotas in my life and 3 cars with Auto Nation, but have never had the lack of integrity, follow-through and non-solutions that I have experienced with the purchase of this car. Unlike others, I can't afford to sell/replace my car at this time, and can't live with it as is. I truly love my car, but do not feel safe using it and am totally frustrated. All I want is for Toyota and/or its mfr.) to own up to the design flaw and either fix or replace it. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where the contact was advised that the failure may be related with a faulty light bulb; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 9,300. The VIN was not provided.

The contact owns a 2016 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that upon coming to a complete stop, the "Check Charging System," message was displayed and the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000.

Hit a dog on the highway at 66 mph on the passenger front and all of the airbags deployed except the one on the passenger side front. Driver is fine, the poor dog did not make it. Now the car is a total loss.

Vehicle- 2016 Toyota Camry As I was making a slight turn on the highway, my steering wheel began to sparatically veering left and right, which resulted in me hitting a curb, not once but twice. Due to the heavy impact and harsh involuntary, out of control steering the airbag should have deployed. However, it failed to do so. Instead, only the "airbag light" came on my dashboard along with warning lights that had not been there prior to accident.

STEERING

Erratic steering issue related to weak car battery. I have a 2016 Toyota Camry XLE. The car began pulling to the left then to the right while driving down a straight and even road. The car would then resume normal steering for a minute or two, then the erratic steering behavior would resume for several minutes. In addition, the steering wheel would not return to center after making left or right turns. This steering issue would begin 1 - 5 minutes from the start of a trip a continue throughout the journey. This issue has been reported by many other Camry owners in several online automotive related repair sites with each person describing these same steering issues. They stated that the problem was resolved when they replaced their car battery. I decided to replace my 4-year-old True Start battery with a new DieHard Platinum battery from Advance Auto Parts and had them install it a week ago. Since then, the steering issue has not returned, and I consider this issue resolved.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL · UNKNOWN OR OTHER

I was on the highway during traffic hour going approximately 40 mph at 2 rpm and when I tried to accelerate to keep up with the flow of traffic, the car did not accelerate and actually slowed down and suddenly shifted down below 1 rpm which caused the oncoming cars behind me to hit their brakes hard. After it slowed down and did not accelerate, even though I pressed the gas pedal further, it suddenly shifted to 3.5 rpm and bolted forward towards the vehicle slowing down in front of me causing me to slam the brakes. It felt as if there was a disconnect between the transmission and the engine. Nothing popped up on the dashboard. This continued twice more before I pulled over and restarted the car to see if would help and it sort of did for about 10 miles before occurring once more before I reached my destination, so I pulled over and checked it on my OM126p and it showed no faults in the system. I then took it to the mechanic the next day and the car was fine the mechanic cleared the vehicle and said it was probably due to a clogged fuel filter and I have an appointment with them in hopes of fixing this problem. Now I’ve read into the problem and it seems to be a recurring problem and there’s been countless situations like mine in which the safety of both I and others on the road have been put at great risk. Please look into the problem on the off chance it isn’t a problem with filters. Please look after the safety of everybody on the road. Thank you.

I parked my Toyota Camry Hybrid on my sloped driveway, and it wouldn't turn off, change gears, no response when gas pedal pressed. I called my insurance to tow it and while I was waiting, I tried to open the trunk to remove items. It wouldn't open, but somehow, I was able to get it into neutral thinking perhaps I could open the trunk. Not so. The car started rolling down the drive, bottomed out at the end, rolled across the street into a ditch. Fortunately, the ditch stopped it form hitting the 2 cars across the street and their house. It was still running. The neighbors all arrived to see me sobbing. The men tried to turn it off, but no luck. The insurance company totaled it because the frame was bent. I hadn't had my car very long and I was devastated. It was still drivable and I had to keep driving it even though the mechanic I took it to told me not to. The mechanic looked it over and could find no reason for the issue. I eventually found a used Toyota Avalon in silver, but not the beautiful sparkly red of the Camry. It made it onto America's Funniest Videos, but it's not funny. I tried to attach the video my Ring took, but I can't get it to attach. If you'd like to see me running down the driveway chasing it I can send you the video another way. It's on TikTok. Fortunately, I wasn't able to get into the car or the door would have flattened me. The information center touch screen does not respond in the cold weather

This 2016 Toyota Camry LE developed a steering problem. Initially, the steering pulled mildly to the left when the car was cold. This resolved after 5 minutes of driving. My mechanic could find no problem with the steering. Eventually (2 weeks) the steering would additionally intermittently pull moderately to the right. This was not reproducible. If I did not hold the wheel firmly, the car would turn off the road or across the lane to the right. Within one week the car would became difficult to start. Two days later the battery failed completely. Replacing the battery totally corrected the steering problems. I conclude that the failing battery could not adequately power the electric motors in the power steering. This was the first sign of a failing battery. I had never heard of this before. There was no warning light. I believe that such an unusual sign of a failing battery should be publicized as an important warning for all cars with electrically controlled power steering.

This was a T-Bone accident. My front airbags did not deploy as the hit happened at 40 mph.

The car starts shaking and the stirring wheel at 40 mph or more. 10 /1/23.

SERVICE BRAKES

The rear brake (passage side) had very uneven wearing. It is the outside pad only. It is a potential safety issue. It was discovered when performing brake inspection by myself. There was no warning except some grinding noise.

My car would not turn off, change gears out of park into drive or reverse, no reaction when the gas pedal was pushed. It was part way into the garage on an inclined driveway. I called my insurance company to have a tow truck help. I got out of the car to try and open the trunk and get my shopping out of it, but the trunk would not open either. I thought perhaps if I put the car in neutral it might open, but instead it rolled down the driveway, bottomed out at the end of the driveway, rolled across the street and crashed into the ditch. Thank goodness it hit the ditch because it was headed toward the neighbor's cars and house. It was still running when it stopped in the ditch! The neighbors all came out and tried to turn it off without success. The frame was bent, the rear end of the car was smashed and the insurance company said it was totaled. My car had been in perfect condition. I have since spoken with others who know of friends who have had the same issue. One person left their car running all night until it ran out of gas.

ENGINE

Just at 70,000 miles a service light came on. After checking I found the oil was very low, about 2 quarts. I took it to the dealer for the oil change on 10/17/2022 and the service tech said that the hybrids use (burn) a little oil. That seems excessive to me. I just check my oil and it is a quart low with 3800 miles after the last oil change. Could have been burning oil for some time and didn't know it due to the fact I always took it to the dealer for the oil changes. They never said anything about the car burning or using oil, There is no leak as no oil in my driveway and on the engine. I'm afraid it might lock up on me when I on the road and could cause me to wreak.

ENGINE

Micro leaks in radiator top plastic, could be defect with any camrys. Had to replace radiator.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

STRUCTURE

Roof and sunroof structures began making continuous loud "popping" noises, very startling and distracting to driver and passengers. Toyota is aware of the problem, it involves the structure of the sunroof mating to the structure of the vehicle roof. This defect has existed since at least the 2007 model year, and Toyota published official guides for Toyota dealer repair procedures. Toyota refused the procedure due to my vehicle being out of its 3 year/36,000 mile warranty, instead quoting around $1600 for the repair. The popping noises are very loud, similar to a rock hitting the windshield. This startles the driver and causes the driver to jump and lose focus. This is a very well-known defect and Toyota is hiding behind the fact that it usually begins after the warranty period is expired. Toyota should cover its repair.

POWER TRAIN

I have taken my car into the dealership twice now to be looked at for transmission issues. There’s a delay in acceleration and shifting gears. It struggles to move quickly when needing to get out of the way of any potential danger. This lack of responsiveness is dangerous and reported on many Toyotas as something “normal” and as such, the dealership says they can not replicate the problem.

I was stopped at a traffic light, on an uphill grade, for roughly thirty seconds when my 2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid just started slowly accelerating. I looked down and my foot was still on the brake. The car then accelerated quickly. I turned into the left hand turn lane in order to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me. The car then jumped the center divider and slam in the curb on the other side of the street before it stopped. At no time did I take my foot off the brake. There was only minor damage to the front bumper, but I destroyed two plants in the center divide. (I do not know, as of yet, if there was any damage to underneath of car.) As I was less than two miles from home, I drove the vehicle home. The next business day I had the vehicle towed to the Toyota dealership in San Juan Capistrano, CA. I told them of the problem and they immediately notified corporate. Corporate TOOK possession of the car and did not issue its report until June 1, 2022 (31 days after the incident).

STRUCTURE

After driving in highway about 1 hour, The driver side door HALF OPENED BY ITSELF. Car has ~60K miles, this incident is happening for the first time. Before driving door was closed as usual. The car speed was ~ 77 mph during the incident, It was windy day, road quality was ideal.

On 01/14/2022, I was in a car accident. I hit a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport head on at 45 mph and my airbags didn’t deploy nor did my seatbelts lock. My car is available for inspection at Classic Collision of Augusta body repair shop. Since my airbags did not deploy and my seatbelt did not lock, I made contact with my steering wheel and my right hand made contact with the dash. My passenger’s airbags did not deploy nor did their seatbelt lock. They made contact with the window, door, and dash of my car. We sustained injuries from the accident. Unknown if problem has been reproduced or confirmed by dealer or service center. Vehicle has been inspected by my auto insurance and the body repair shop, but unknown results. Message appeared when mileage hit 48479 due for oil change per the mileage on the sticker on my windshield.

I was hit by a car that ran a red light going around 45mph. The front passenger side was hit, we were hit hard. No airbags deployed. Other cars airbags did deploy.

I hit a deer that caused all of the airbags to go off. A specific airbag under the steering wheel, a knee bag, caused severe bruising and soft tissue to my calf’s, crippling me for nearly a week. At one point I visited my doctor who confirmed the damage, did a test for roving blood clots, and sent me home to continue to recover. It’s been just over 5 months and I still have visible damage. I would have suffered no injuries if that ‘knee-curtain’ hadn’t been there or if it had not acted like a brick slamming into my legs. I’m concerned for others who may suffer similar unnecessary injuries because of this device.
